1. Western North Pacific area (180 to Malay Peninsula):
a. Tropical cyclone summary:
(1) at 310000z, tropical storm 17w (Sanvu) was located near
26.5n 141.5e, approximately 52 nm southwest of chichi jima, and has
tracked eastward at 05 knots over the past six hours. Maximum
sustained surface winds were estimated at 55 knots gusting to 70
knots. See ref a (wtpn31 pgtw 310300) for further details.
(2) no other tropical cyclones.
B. Tropical disturbance summary:
(1) the area of convection previously located near 17.7n
122.7e, is now located near 18.0n 118.6e, approximately 240 nm
northwest of Manila, Philippines. Animated multispectral imagery
depicts an elongated, deep convection consolidating over the low-
level circulation center (LLCC) with formative banding over the
northern semi-Circle. A 2230z ssmis 91ghz images shows curved, deep
convection over the northern periphery. Upper-level analysis
indicates a favorable environment with low vertical wind shear (5-10
kts) with good poleward outflow and warm SST (29-31c). Dynamic
models are in agreement that the system will continue to develop and
move northwest over the next 24 hours. Maximum sustained surface
winds are estimated at 15 to 20 knots. Minimum sea level pressure is
estimated to be near 1005 mb. The potential for the development of a
significant tropical cyclone within the next 24 hours is high. See
ref b (wtpn21 pgtw 310200) for further details.
(2) no other suspect areas.
